We left the Takatimu Mountains and headed to Te Anau. This was going to be our base for the rest of our New Zealand trip.
Our first visit was to the DOC office to check out options for walks and also the weather forecast. The we set up camp at the nearby motor camp. This left us a few hours free in the late afternoon afternoon, so we headed to Rainbow Reach on the Kepler Track. This provided very pleasant rainforest walking and some amazing fungi and slime moulds. We didn’t actually walk too far as we spent a lot of time photographing.
Next morning, we set off for The Divide – the pass over the Southern Alps on the road to Milford Sound. This is a famous tourist road and there was a lot to see and photograph. We took our time as we indeed to do only a short section of walking later that afternoon, and the weather was bad, but slowly improving.
The mountains of Fiordland, on the far side of Lake Te Anau were very spectacular and we stopped frequently for photo stops. We also stopped further up the road at the Mirror Lakes (along with several hundred other tourists….)
