This was our second day spent visiting Kalyarr National Park. This time we were going to the Norwood section. Norwood was the former family property that Valerie grew up on. Valerie had been influential in badgering Brian to put on a NPA trip to visit the National Park, and it was great to have her along this day, not only as a friend but also as a very special guide with her knowledge, memories and insights.
As usual, on most mornings in Hay we visited the Murrumbidgee River near the Caravan Park.
Galahs
Little Friarbird
We then met up with Brain and Faye, and also John who had arrived. Then we set off along the Oxley Road. Along the way more birds.

We first stopped at Ita Lake. Two days earlier we had seen this from the air.
During World War II, Valerie’s mother was often alone for long periods on the Norwood property while Valerie’s father was serving in the War. The nearest neighbour, was only present on weekends, on the adjoining Ita Property. When he was present he helped support her mother in many ways – checking she was OK and delivering mail and supplies. A tough time for her and his help was never forgotten. The Ita Property was later acquired by Valerie’s family.
Valerie also showed us this waterhole. It had an old name, that had proceeded Valerie’s family – The “Poison Waterhole“. Valerie does not know the origin of the name, but suspects that earlier this waterhole, vital for the local Aboriginal people for water was deliberately poisoned by early settlers.
Ita Lake was not a reliable source of water. It fills only after good rain. And when full it attracts a lot of birdlife –
