Local Tawny Frogmouths – 5 November 2022

On this day, I visited, mainly on a bike ride, some of the local Tawny Frogmouth nests in order to check on their progress.

Morton Park

The first site I visited was Morton Park on Canterbury Road at Dulwich Hill. Here I could see at least one chick in the nest –

Marrickville Golf Course – Bruce St

I soon located the family. They had moved to different tree, but it was not far from where I had seen them previously. The parents were perched separately, and away from the two chicks.

Cooks River – Ewen Park

I could see no change in this nest. I think the parents here are the ones that that in recent seasons nested on the far side of the River, and each year I observed them – they did not have any chicks that fledged. They seemed to sit on the nest from September till late December.

Cooks River – Gough Whitlam Park

This nest is very high and hard to see. The male sitting on the nest during the day seems restless and I think there is at least one chick.

Sydney Park

The three chicks have now fledged. One was sitting next two one parent and the other two were close to the other parent.

I then visited other places in the park. The Australasian Grebes are still maintaining their nest.

And, I think for the first time, Australian White Ibis have successfully nested.

Back to the Tawny Frogmouths. One of the parents had moved ashore distance.
