Bushcare at Lion Island – 26 November 2022

Our bushcare group had recently done some weeding at Lion Island. This was back in June. A followup session had been organised, but had to be postponed due to bad weather, but now it was finally going ahead.

Once again, Enmoore had organised the group, with the help of NPWS rangers Andrew and Robyn.

We met at Palm Beach – at the Barrenjoey car park at 8:15 am, and there boarded a barge which transported us and the tools to the island.

As we approached we saw a White-bellied Sea Eagle

We farewelled the barge once we were dropped off.

A Channel-billed Cuckoo flew overhead.

We climbed up through the lantana, and then split into two groups. One was weeding in that area, and the other larger group, which I was in, continued up to the summit area, where we had been weeding on the previous visit.

While we were getting ready to start weeding, a Peregrine Falcon flew past.

Our weeding was removing Asparagus. At first we cleaned up the area we had been weeding on the previous visit, then the harder work started, digging out larger plants.

At morning tea, we saw another Peregrine Falcon. A juvenile this time.

There are great views from this summit area. Below is the view towards Barrenjoey and Pittwater.

And there is an old inscription.

It is a lot easier to read in my previous post. It says “J Durry 1914 F Roche 1914”.

Here is the view looking north –

The barge picked us up for the return at 1:30 pm. On the way back we had good views of the seals on Barrenjoey.

Lion Island is a very special place, and not open to the public. So its nice to be able to visit to help out with the weeding.
