Cooks River Walk and visit to Sydney Park – 14 January 2023

Sue had got in touch, she was heading out for a walk down the Cooks River. Would Valerie and myself like to join her? We did, and we all met up near Marrickville Golf Course.

We first visited The Dibble Street Waterhole – but we spotted no interesting birds there, so we continued to the Tawny Frogmouths in the Golf Course.

We soon spotted one perched in a tree –

And the second was sitting on their nest –

It was hard to see, but it looks like there is a chick –

We did not see too much as we walked down the Cooks River. Here is a Little Pied Cormorant

At Gough Whitlam Park, we looked for more Tawny Frogmouths. We spotted one perched in a tree –

We then called into the cafe for coffee. After that, I suggested we visit Sydney Park, as it was not far away, andI had seen some good birds a few days earlier.

So we walked to Tempe Station and caught a train to Sydenham and another to St Peters and were soon in Sydney Park. We first looked for the Tawny Frogmouths. On my previous trip, I had spotted two, This time we saw four. A parent and three juveniles –

Next to the Island Pond.  Here is a Dusky Moorhen with a small chick –

Then we saw a Dollarbird. It was perched high in tree on the island. Every ten minutes or so it would take off on a flight to catch some insects to eat.

We had less success with the Buff-banded Rail. We visited the spot where I had seen it on my previous trip several times. On one visit, we did see one briefly –

And then we headed to the large pond. We could see this Turtle

And we saw the Australasian Grebes. Here is the juvenile –

And the chick –

And here it is, being fed –

It was then time to head home!
