Long Reef Birds – 19 February 2023

I decided to visit Long Reef, so caught buses to Long Reef. I was soon out on the lookout.

I was hoping to be able to photograph some raptors – in particular the local Ospreys. I had to wait awhile – but I eventually saw two.

I arrived a bit after 11 am, and before going down to the beach level, I photographed some Superb Fairy-wrens near the gate.

I ten descended to the rock platform level. The tide was still too high to venture out onto the rock platform, so I had an early lunch. I had just finished when an Osprey arrived.

I moved out to get closer view.

The Osprey had a drink –

It then went for s short flight.

It looks like it is hunting – but it is just landing –

Then it went off for a longer flight.

Then it returned to the rock platform, and had a good wash.

Then off for another flight.

This time it flew off  towards Collaroy.

The tide was now low enough to look for migratory birds. I spotted a lot of Red-necked Stints.

I could not spot any other migratory birds this visit. I then concentrated on the Crested Terns. Some were coming back with fish –

The chick seemed to reject the fish, so the parent flew off with it.

A shot time later the parent arrived again with a larger fish –

Great Cormorant

Then a second Osprey arrived.

It had a bath too.

Then it took off and headed out to sea.

I had been hoping for some action shots of Ospreys catching fish. I was not able to get those shots this visit, but I did witness some nice behaviour.
