Fungi at Birdwood Gully – 2 May 2023

Valerie joined me for a very good day of hunting for fungi in Birdwood Gully at Springwood. Good weather was forecast  and we had pleasant journey in the train to Springwood. Then we crossed the highway, and were soon on the track down Birdwood Gully.

I was on the lookout for waxcaps. Would there be a lot to after the recent rain? a few days before there had been about 45 mm of rain recorded on the gauge at Faulconbridge.

Here is some of the fungi we saw –

Cantherellus concinnus

Lactaria eucalypti

And our first waxcap – Hygrocybe sp.

And we spotted a Wasp OrchidChiloglottis seminuda

Lower down at the creek, we started spotting green waxcaps. I think they are all Hygrocybe batesii

Hygrocybe sp.

Hygrocybe batesii

Clavulinopsis sulcata

And we looked a bit more and found a lot of this coral fungi out. Probably best to say Clavulinopsis sp.

These waxcaps, with their yellow cap rims are probably a different species to the other red waxcaps –

Trichoglossum hirsutum

I think these orange waxcaps are likely to be Hygrocybe aurantiopallens – based on a larger one that had fallen over.

And we found these green waxcaps. They have yellow gills. Perhaps Humidicutis helicoides.

We found the two above, and the one below –

Hymenoscyphus sp.

in another spot, we found these viscid waxcaps. Likely to be Gliophorus viridis

And a nice pair of purple waxcaps – Porpolomopsis lewelliniae

More Hymenoscyphus sp. ?

Hidden away, under a log was this waxcap with its orange gills. Hygrocybe taekeri

We only found one of the blue Entolomas – Inocephalus virescens group –

Hygrocybe sp.

I spotted these very tiny fungi growing on a fern frond –

Mycena sp.

Entoloma sp.

Cyptotrama asprata

Trichoglossum hirsutum

I was looking to see if I could find any Parrot Waxcaps. I had discovered a cluster of them last season in one small area, and I know they often occur in the same place each season. I found one – Gliophorus psittacinus group –

Trichoglossum hirsutum

Hygrocybe sp.

Armillaria sp.

Dacrymyces cupularis

Pseudohydnum gelatinosum

Ramaria lorithamnus

Perhaps Cortinarius sp.

Helotium terrestre

Ramaria sp.

Hymenotorrendiella eucalypti

Clavulina subrugosa

Lactifluss sp.

Hydnum repandum

Cordyceps cranstounii

Slime Mould

Hypholoma sp.

Clavulina subrugosa

Phaeoclavulina ochracea

Ramaria sp.

A nice Greenwood orchid –

Russula rosea

We had found a very good ensemble of fungi, including lots of nice waxcaps and corals. Thanks to Valerie for helping with the spotting and great company.
