Birds at Oatley Park – 3 July 2023

My friend Valerie, had chosen Oatley Park as a venue to celebrate her birthday with a picnic, and to wander around for some bird watching. We were joined by Sue and Deb. We all had a very pleasant time.

Valerie was hoping for another sighting of the Powerful Owl we had seen on an earlier trip to the Park, the previous week. So before our picnic, we strolled around some of the tracks. Here are some of the birds we saw –

Laughing Kookaburra

Golden Whistler

This Rainbow Lorikeet is inspecting a hold in the termite nest. It would have once been the nest of a Kookaburra or Sacred Kingfisher.

The Lorikeet and its mate suddenly flew away at great speed. A raptor had arrived. We spotted it perched high ain a tree nearby. It is probably a Brown Goshawk.

It took us a while to find the Powerful Owl. But our searching was rewarded when we saw it perched not too high up –

Spotted Pardalote

White-browed Scrubwren

Eastern Yellow Robin

White-browed Scrubwren

Red-browed Finch

Crimson Rosellas

Red Wattlebird

We then found a nice rock lookout away from the roads for our picnic.

After lunch, we wandered around a bit more. From the Hills Lookout, we spotted both Ospreys on their nest crane far way at Lugano –

Little Black Cormorants

Grey Butcherbird

This is a female Rose Robin

Brown Thornbill

And some Australasian Grebes in the Lime Kiln Bay Wetlands –

Little Pied Cormorants

And we again looked for the Powerful Owl. It had moved, but not too far from where we had earlier seen it. The light was not better for photography.

We finished the day at the nearby Adora Cafe with coffee and treats.
