Birds at Tempe and the Cooks River – 8 July 2023

I started the day with the Tempe Birdos – taking part in the early morning bird survey. This month I joined the group surveying at Tempe Reserve. Then after morning tea, I walked home via the Cooks River and took a few more photos along the way.

The highlight was seeing a pair of Hoary-headed Grebes in the Cooks River at Tempe Reserve. This is the first time I have seen this species of Grebe in the inner west of Sydney.

As usual, they are foraging for food. This one dives and catches a small fish.

Now to catch another –

Some other birds –

Little Black Cormorant

Pied Currawong

We could hear alarm calls from the Noisy Miners, and they were certainly watchful. But we could not spot any raptors.

Australian Ravens

Pelican, and Little Black Cormorants, and Silver Gulls

Little Pied Cormorant

Welcome Swallow

Crested Pigeon

Walking home via the Cooks River, I photographed this Welcome Swallow about to grab an insect at H J Mahoney Reserve –

And here are the Tawny Frogmouths at Marrickville Golf Course –

Anda last photo – an Australasian Grebe at the Dibble Avenue Waterhole –
