Asgard Plateau Weekend 9 – 10 September 2023

I spent a very pleasant weekend in the bush on the Asgard Plateau near My Victoria in the upper Blue Mountains. I was with a large group of friends who had all headed out to camp together to celebrate two birthdays.

The Asgard Plateau is a delightful place to undertake some bushwalking or camping. On this trip, we had thought about camping high up on one of the heads, but the forecast was for cold windy weather, so we camped at the most used spot at Asgard Swamp.

It is a short walk down a fire road, that leads off from the Victoria Falls road.

Near the campsite we spotted a wallaby –

Late on Saturday afternoon, quite a few in the party climbed up to Thor Head for the fine views.

Back at the campsite, we had a fine evening around a warm campfire. It was a cool night, and we woke up to frost. One of the group had large chunks of ice in his water bottle.

I made a side trip to visit a small Aboriginal art cave. It has some faint hand stencils.

It also has some faint charcoal art –

The Waratahs were about to open.

Later in the morning, most of the group climbed nearby Asgard Head.

We spotted another Wallaby

A wider view –

There were lots of small Caladenia sp. orchids around –

More views. Mount Banks

Then after lunch, it was time to pack up and head out. It had been a very pleasant weekend.

Many thanks to John and Chuin Nee for a lift to the start of the walk (and back).
