This was another National Parks Association of NSW walk led by Brian Everingham. Most of the party woke up at an incredibly early hour and travelled by train to reach Minnamurra around 8:30 am.
In the party was Brian, Valerie, Sue, Vivienne, Joane, Deb, Elaine and myself. Arriving at Minnamurra, we quickly looked around for a cafe for our coffee fix. We first found a church –
But around the corner was the Minnamurra Cafe which proved to be very good at satisfying our needs.
Then we walked down to the Minnamurra River where the track starts. On the far side of the river we could see some Crested Terns and a pair of Bar-tailed Godwits.
Then a Pelican arrived –
The rugged Stack Island stands as a sentinel –
The first part of the path took us up and over Minnamurra Head.
And here is a panorama showing the river flowing in to the sea –
A Nankeen Kestrel hovered overhead.
A little further along was a whale observation platform. We saw no whales.
And then walk pasta dyke took us to Jones Beach.
At the far end of Jones Beach, we climbed up to view the sea stacks of Cathedral Rocks.
And then down to the Boneyard.
The Boneyard is popular with surfers.
We then followed the path a little further before turning off to visit Bombo Quarry. This is a very interesting place with the latite (of the Bumbo Formation) forming columns.
We left the quarry and our next stop was the picnic area just before Bombo Beach. This was a good place to stop for lunch.
Kiama was in sight! The final section saw another Nankeen Kestrel –
Then a long walk along the beach.
At the far end, we took the path under the railway line. Nearby were some Eurasian Coots –
And at Kiama – we saw a few more birds – Little Corella and Galah –
Then the long, but pleasant train trip back to Sydney. Thanks again to Brian for leading the walk.
