Fungi at Wolli Creek – 25 May 2024

I attended the Field Study of the Sydney Fungal Studies Group at Wolli Creek Regional Park on Saturday morning. The Field Study was also open to members of the Wolli Creek Preservation Society. We met at Girrahween Park and after a briefing, we alls started looking for fungi. We went as far along the track at the old swimming pool between the climbing area and the Flying Fox Camp.

We had a great group of very enthusiastic people along and we found a very good range of fungi, although some was starting to dry out. Here is some of what we saw –

Ramariopsis crocea

Scleroderma cepa

Boletellus sinapipes

Anthracobia muelleri

Laccaria sp.

Anthracobia muelleri

Gyroporus mcnabbii

Anthracobia muelleri

Russula sp.

Inonotus albertinii

This above photo shows gutation – where the fungus exudes droplets (mainly water) to maintain its own internal hydrostatic pressure. It indicates that the fungus is growing off a living tree. It was growing at the base of an Angophora costata.

Lactarius eucalypti

Tremella mesenterica

Clavulina cinerea

Cuphophyllus austropratensis

Russula rosea

Cortinarius archeri

Fistulinella mollis

Gliophorus graminicolor

Hygrocybe taekeri

Bolete

Lycoperdon sp.

Clavaria pusio

Amanita sp.

Amanita xanthocephala

Amanita sp.

Cantharellus concinnus

Amanita sp.

Mycena sp.

Anthracobia muelleri

Clavaria pusio

After lunch, the group broke up. I remained to continue with some photography. I later found this rather old red waxcap – Hygrocybe sp.

And these stinkhorns we right alongside the track – we had all missed them earlier. Aseroë rubra –

Russula lenkunya

Russula sp.

Descolea recedens

Probably Cortinarius sp.

Omphalotus nidfiformis

These Cortinarius were growing in the burnt out area. Perhaps Cortinarius sublargus

Clavaria pusio

Clavulinopsis sulcata

And many thanks to Nina, one of the group, for pointing out these developing orchids –

Many thanks to all those that came along and helped spot the fungi, and particular thanks to Cass Martiensen, NPWS Ranger in charge of the park for granting permission for the Field Study to go ahead. Also thanks to Peter and Julia from the WCPS for organising their members to attend.
