Back to Sydney Park – 14 August 2024

I was keen to see more of the Pacific Baza at Sydney Park, so I made an afternoon visit. But while I was there, it was raining – light rain, but continual, so I was walking around under an umbrella. And the birdlife was very subdued. Even the Noisy Miners were quiet for once. So, I did not spot the Baza. Nor did I see any Buff-banded Rails, which were my next target birds.

White-faced Heron

Australian Swamphen

Dusky Moorhens

White-faced Heron

Grey Butcherbird

Due to the rain, some Stinkhorns were out – Pseudocolus fusiformis

Australasian Figbirds

At least 50 Figbirds suddenly took to the air and flew around and then landed again. I was looking around  for a raptor, but could not spit any.

My best photo sequence was a White-faced Heron coming in to land –

  1. I now live in Perth but 40 years ago I was a scout leader at Mt Riverview and I took a hike with my troop down the Glenbrook gorge to the nepean,we came across a rock which had the 23rd psalm engraved into it, does anyone have a photo of this rock and know the story behind the cutting of the words into the rock.

Many have seen the rock. It is well known amongst bushwalkers. But no one seems to know who did the engraving. See my blog entry on Sassafras Gully History for a photo and information. Use the search tool.
