Malabar Headland – 16 September 2024

This was an unusual trip to Malabar Headland with Valerie and Sue. It was unusual because we did not spot a single Peregrine Falcon. Like the previous trip, we met at Maroubra Beach and first visited the Western Track. I was on the lookout for orchids.

We soon spotted the Beard Orchids, we had seen just starting to open on the previous visit.

Red Beard Orchid – Calochilus paludosus

And thanks to Anna, this time we spotted the Flying Duck Orchids.

Flying Duck Orchid – Caleana major

New Holland Honeyeater

We then walked into the Eastern Section of the National Park, and headed to the Peregrine Falcon nesting area. But despite a lot of looking, we did not spot a single Peregrine Falcon while we were there.

We did see some Humpback Whales

Little Black Cormorant

And there was a huge number of small fish –

Walking out, back to Maroubra, I was looking for more orchids. Here are some –

Copper Beard Orchid – Calochilus campestris

Slender Onion Orchid – Microtis parviflora

And the Flannel Flowers are now out –

We enjoyed a very pleasant day out on the sandstone cliffs in perfect weather. But we could not help wondering what the Peregrine Falcons were doing. It was also good to catch up with Alana on her daily walk.
