Transport Heritage – 5 October 2024

The whole of the October Long Weekend was a Transport Heritage event. I took part in some of the Saturday activities, including a steam train ride from Central to Hurstsville and return.

The whole day was very interesting.

I started by catching a bus to Sydenham. And then I got in a good position to watch and photograph the first steam train journey of the day.

I did not have to wait long for Locomotive 3526 “Nanny” to come along. It would be the one I would also travel in later.

I then caught a regular train to Wolli Creek. I then waited for the second steam locomotive that was doing rides – Locomotive 3265 “Hunter”.

My train ride was not till 1 pm, so that left me plenty of time to visit Tempe House, which is a short walk from Wolli Creek Station. This heritage house is the original residence of John Brodie Sparks who settled on the Tempe Estate.

The residence also has fine gardens.

The house was later sold to the Catholic Church, who used it as a residence for “fallen girls”. They built chapel nearby –

Back at Wolli Creek Station, I saw a NIF (New Intercity Fleet) Train undergoing testing.

I then caught a train to Central, and walked out to platform 2 and 3 where the heritage trains and carriages were –

It was interesting to wander along the platform.

This is one of the first double decker carriages –

It was now time for my ride.

The carriages were wonderfully restored. And the train was full of passengers.

Outside were some cosplay people –

The trip to Hurstville and back was very interesting.

Now back at Central.

This was a very good day.
