Sassafras Gully – A Look for Fungi – 18 March 2016

I went on a walk down Sassafras Gully at Springwood to see if any fungi was out after recent rain. The rain had only been light, so I didn’t expect to see too much.

As it turned out – there was not a lot out, but I did find some interesting things.

I entered the valley by the track from Sassafras Gully Road and walked down to the junction of the Victory Track before finding something of interest. A short way up the Victory Track I found a few cordyceps. These ones are now classified as Ophiocordyceps robertsii. It is interesting to zoom in to the photos and look at the head of he fungus – it looks a bit like a tiny version of a Xanthorrhoea spike. I also found one Cordyceps gunnii but it was not in good condition.

I also found a nice slime mould –

While I was having lunch a small insect landed on my lunch bag. It was quite interesting and I couldn’t recall having seen one before. It could flex its body like a spring and could jump a fair way. When i got home I found it was a bristletail, which are a bit like silverfish.

I left the valley via the track up Magdala Creek to Fairy Dell.

More photos, together with identification are on my website here.
