Balls Head and Berry Island – 29 March 2016

This was a pleasant day of walking around part of the shore of Sydney Harbour. A good friend, Stephen, from Hobart was passing through Sydney and had most of the day to spare before his flight home.

So I met up with Stephen and also Rob at Waverton. After a coffee, we headed off towards Balls Head. We went via Waverton Park, past an old industrial area which is now public parklands, and past an old marina to Balls Head.

We then completed a circuit around the headland. There are many great vantage spots overlooking   the city, Goat Island and up Sydney Harbour towards Parramatta.

We had intended to walk through the tunnel under the old Coal Loader – but this is currently closed off because of building work. I assumed a housing development was going ahead, but later Stephen did some research and found it was a rooftop garden being built. This sounds good!

We then headed back to Waverton for an early lunch. From their, it was not far to a track down to Oyster Cove, this site of an old gasworks. Next to the gasworks is a huge housing development. We then crossed a bridge and into a nice patch of remnant bushland – Badangi Reserve. The track connects up with Berry Island – and land tied island jutting out into the harbour. More good bushland with some interesting aboriginal engravings.

We finished up our walk by following the track around to Berrys Creek and then up the creek to Wollstonecraft Station. On the way we passed an old mineshaft.
