I have been visiting Long Reef quite regularly lately, and no wonder, it has been a very good venue to photograph Ospreys.

This visit was no exception, there were plenty of Ospreys (and some quiet times), and also some other nice birds. It was low tide when I arrived so I could venture out on the rock platform. Here is a selection of photos –
Osprey

This Osprey landed on the rock platform.

But it didn’t stay long.

The Black Noddy was also at Long Reef, having recently moved from Curl Curl.

It seemed quite content to sit on a rock.
Here is a passing Crested Tern –

Australasian Darter

Ruddy Turnstone

Back to the Black Noddy –

Some more waders –
Red-necked Stint

Great Cormorant

Sooty Oystercatcher

Grey-tailed Tattler

Red-necked Stint

Then a large helicopter flew past (Boeing CH47 Chinock helicopter Australia Army A15-302) –

White-faced Heron

Then an Osprey flew past with a nice fish –

Pied Cormorant

Another Osprey arrived. It was hunting for fish.

It dived –

Not successful.

Another dive –

Again , not successful.

It landed on the island near another Osprey (it was not high tide).

Then with Osprey took off. One looked angry.

A White-bellied Sea Eagle had arrived.

One of the Ospreys flew after the Sea Eagle.

It was now time for me to head home. It had been a good day.
Amazing pics, David. I was at Long Reef at the weekend – without my camera – when 3 ospreys were patrolling . No fish in the half hour I watched them though.
Went back yesterday afternoon with my Sony A7 and a 300 lens. Only one osprey but he was rewarded with a fine fish. I got lots of very poor pics – any tips on how to take photos as good as yours?
