I decided to visit the Cooks River to see what birds were around. I caught a bus along Illawarra Road, and was soon walking down along the south bank of the River. I was planning on meeting Sue, who was coming by train to Tempe, and then walking upstream. We met at Gough Whitlam Park.

Walking down from Illawarra Road, I spotted a Little Pied Cormorant –

And an Australasian Darter –

There were at least two Sacred Kingfishers at Gough Whitlam Park. They were both very skittish 0 making photography difficult.

Here is a juvenile Little Pied Cormorant –

And here is a Great Egret perched in a mangrove on the island at the Billabong in Gough Whitlam Park –

A Little Pied Cormorant was hunting for fish in the Billabong.

Willie Wagtail

And back to the Sacred Kingfishers –

As soon as you spotted one, it would fly off, often to the far side of the River.

Back at the Billabong, the Little Pied Cormorant was still hunting –

We also spotted a single Grey-headed Flying Fox on the island –

Galah

We then started walking upstream, and kept going all the way past the Boat Harbour to Canterbury Road. Despite there being low tide at the Boat Harbour, we didn’t spot too many more birds.
