Back to Lime Kiln Bay (and Oatley Park and The Blackbutt Trail) – 24 April 2025

After my recent trip to Lime Kiln Bay, friends Valerie and Sue were keen to see the Boobook Owl. Another bird species we were hoping to see were Rose Robins. Well, we didn’t see the Boobook Owl, but we did see a Powerful Owl.

Also, we had good encounters with Rose Robins.

When we arrived, I took Sue and Valerie to the tree with the hollow that the Boobook Owl had been roosting in, but the hollow appeared empty. Perhaps the Boobook had decided to leave? When I saw it a few days earlier, the hollow was being checked out by Rainbow Lorikeets, and there was a Grey Butcherbird calling loudly nearby. Or perhaps the Boobook Owl had been encouraged to leave by a previous occupant – a nesting Powerful Owl? This I think is quite likely, as we saw a Powerful Owl roosting not too far from the hollow.

On the mudflats, we saw some Royal Spoonbills. Here is one –

And here is a foraging White-faced Heron

There were quite a few small birds nearby. Here are some –
