Mooney Mooney Aboriginal Site, The Mega Cave and More Rock Art at Brooklyn – 5 June 2025

Bob and myself had a very interesting trip in the Gosford – Brooklyn area. We visited a major Aboriginal engraving site, then visited a huge sandstone overhang, and then found a few more Aboriginal sites, then we headed to Brooklyn for another Aboriginal engraving site.

The first site, the Mooney Mooney Aboriginal engraving site is a short walk from the Old Pacific Highway, not far from the Reptile Park at Gosford. It is an amazing site!

We entered a large rock outcrop, and then started looking for engravings.

At one end, we found a few engravings –

There were several large engravings, perhaps dugongs.

We then made our way to the other end of the platform, where  we found the majority of art.

Here is a kangaroo –

This figure seems to have a boomerang –

Fish –

More kangaroos –

And one of several very large figures –

Another kangaroo –

Fish –

Another kangaroo –

Fish –

More kangaroos –

More fish –

A small human figure –

Eel –

This was the most impressive engraving, a large spirit figure –

The head of the figure has a huge head-dress –

And one more fish –

We then followed a fire road that allows access to powerlines and gas pipelines. They led us close to the Mooney Mooney Bridge.

We then followed a rough track.

And it was not too far to a huge sandstone overhang – the Mega Cave.

The cave is veery close to the bridge and suffers from a lot of road noise.

We continued along the base of the cliffs, on an even rougher trail (which we lost once) till we reached another fire road.

More views –

A Peregrine Falcon was flying above –

Waling back along the fire road, we spotted some more rock outcrops. One had a well and some sharpening grooves –

And another had some faint engravings –

And another well –

And some more engravings –

Back at Bob’s car, we drove to Brooklyn, wheeler we had lunch, and then started up the fire road that is also the Great North Walk track. WE walked for a few kilometres towards Brooklyn Dam, and then headed off to a nearby rock outcrop. Here there is more Aboriginal engravings.

Here is a whale –

A human figure –

Another human figure –

And a fish –

There were probably more engravings on the rock platform, but they were too faint to make out. We then headed back down to Brooklyn.

This had been a very interesting day.
