Wolli Creek Fungi – 9 July 2016

This was an activity organised by the Sydney Fungal Studies Group Inc together with the Wolli Creek Preservation Society.  After we met at Girrahween Park – we divide into two groups to look for fungi.

I was in a small group with Joanna and we later met Rowan and we checked out a location near Turrella. This was a spot that Joanna and Gregg had found about a year ago. It is well off the Two Valleys Track and a bit difficult to get to. But getting there is well worthwhile as a lot of very nice fungi seems to spring up there. It seems to be especially good for  waxcaps.

Here are some of the waxcaps that we found –

On previous trips to this location earlier in the season, I had spotted a green capped Hygrocybe that I had thought was Hygrocybe aurantipes. This time I collected some sample specimens (using the SFSG scientific licence) which were later looked at during lunchtime back at Girrahween  Park with the rest of the group. Wax cap experts Ray and Elma Kearney examined these specimens and their conclusion was that what I had collected was not H aurantipes – the colours matched (green cap and red stipe) but the shape did not – stipe was too thin and the cap had a scalloped form. So this is possibly a new species. Here are some photos of it –

In the same area were some nice coral fungi –

And another interesting one that we found was this small brown fungus that has been infected by another fungus (Neobarya agaricicola)
