Long Reef Raptors – 26 April 2026

I headed up to Long Reef again as lately it has been a very good location to photograph raptors, in particular Ospreys. It was another very good day. The highlight was a skirmish between the Osprey and a Sea Eagle.

When I arrived, I could see a few Osprey perched on rocks out on the Headland and on trees and exposed roots. But there was one on a nearby rock with a fish. I moved closer. Another bird photographer, Celine was also there.

Another Osprey flew past.

One landed in a pool nearby.

Another Osprey landed with a fish.

A Grey-tailed Tattler was nearby.

The Tattler flew away –

Another Osprey –

More were flying –

The one on the roots was being harassed by a Willie Wagtail

A passing Australasian Darter

Crested Tern

Back to an Osprey –

A Silver Gull had a fish, or more lily a fish’s tail –

More Ospreys

Was it diving for a fish?

No, it was just having a bath.

Then a White-bellied Sea Eagle arrived over the Headland.

There was pandemonium from the gulls and terns.

The Sea Eagle had spotted something it liked.

The Sea Eagle was after the Osprey’s fish.

The Osprey dropped the fish.

The Sea Eagle tied to grab the fish.

But the fish into the water.

The Osprey was attacking the Sea Eagle.

And more Ospreys joined in.

With three Opsreys around, the Sea Eagle flew away.

But I later spotted the Sea Eagle with a fish and an Osprey –

And, one last Osprey fly past –
