Lane Cove National Park Fungi – 28 June 2026

I made another trip to a particular spot in Lane Cove National Park to see if any more Parrot Waxcaps had appeared. When I arrived, I found the ones I had seen on the previous trip had all fallen to bits, but after a lot of looking I was pleased to spot one fresh one.

Here is another photo of it –

These particular fungi are extremely hard to spot. They seem to blend into the leaf litter of moss. The spot where I find them is quite dark and gloomy. They are also quite small, most being between 1 and 2 cm tall. But they reliably appear in the same small spot each season if conditions are right.

The other location, I have found them is in Birdwood Gully at Springwood. Again, they are extremely hard to spot and again they appear each season (conditions permitting) in the same small area.

And there were some other waxcaps –

Hygrocybe reesiae

Cuphophyllus austropratensis

Gloioxanthomyces chromolimoneus

There was a fair bit of small coral fungi around.

On my walk out of the National Park, I encountered a big storm. Luckily I had brought an umbrella and quickly made my way to a bus shelter.
