Burramoko Head and Hanging Rock 5 – 6 January 2017

This was another walk from Blackheath Railway Station out to Burramoko Head, camping there overnight and walking back the next day. My third walk out to the head in recent months.

Hanging Rock

The walk out along the fire road is quite pleasant. Not too long that it becomes tedious, and no big hills to toil up. Also, on the way out and back there are many beautiful things to be seen. The last two trips there had been a multitude of waratahs. This trip it was orchids. It was nice to spot five different species of orchid.

When I arrived at Burramoko Head, I was the only one there. The lighting was a bit flat for photography, but I did do some flying of my small drone around Hanging Rock. Later in the afternoon, when the light had improved, I did take a few photographs.

Another bushwalker arrived at Burramoko Head and he spent a fair bit of time wandering around trying to find a good campsite. Basically there aren’t any. I usually camp on a small flat area, right on the track. I did this time. It is a little back from the lookout. The other walker ended up setting up his tent at the lookout. A bit exposed, the ground a bit rough and sloping, but what views! The other place you can camp is back on the road, or down in caves near Crayfish Creek.

Overnight it rained a fair bit, and I was not very hopeful for a good sunrise. I did get up early – it was not raining, but still a bit dull and grey. However the Sun did make an appearance and I was able to get some reasonable photos. I also did a few short drone flights near Hanging Rock. The other walker was still in his tent.

Then after a short breakfast, I packed up and walked back to Blackheath. Again at a leisurely pace, trying to spot more orchids.

A nice time in the bush. Here is some of the video shot from my drone –
