Photographing the Super – Blue – Blood Moon – 31 January 2018

During the night, a rather rare astronomical event was going to take place – a “Supermoon” that also coincided with a total lunar eclipse (“Blood Moon”). And as it was also the second full moon of the month, it was also a “Blue Moon”.

Sydney was in a prime position to see the total eclipse, but on the night, it was very cloudy. The forecast was for the clouds to gradually clear, so I went outside several times during the evening. No luck.

The total eclipse would start around midnight, Sydney time. Around 11:30 pm, when I went outside, I found there were some breaks in the clouds, so I went back inside and grabbed my camera and tripod. During the next twenty minutes I was able to get seem poor photos of the Moon – mainly ones with the it partially covered by clouds and also partly eclipsed. My best photo was taken a few minutes before midnight, with the Moon close to being totally eclipsed.

I waited another 30 minutes or so in vain , to see if there were any more breaks in the clouds.

Details – 560 mm, f8, 1/4 second, 3200 ISO, cropped.
