This was a pleasant bushwalking and camping trip with friends to celebrate two birthdays. We headed to a nice campsite at Asgard Swamp on the Asgard Plateau at the head of the Grose Valley at Mt Victoria.
It was a short walk (about 2 kms) to the campsite at Asgard Swamp from the Victoria Falls Fire Road. When we arrived, after setting up our tents, we went to the bottom of the swamp to get some water. However the recent drought meant that the water was very hard to extract. You could ge wet feet, but not much else. So we returned to the campsite, and then headed back about ten minutes to the first swamp. We had seen good pools of water on the walk in.
After this was done, we returned to the campsite and some of us set off for Thor Head. This scenic spot is only a short walk from the campsite and commands magnificent views of the upper Grose Valley.
Back at camp, it was time to break out some good food to share – there was an abundance. And later some birthday cakes appeared. Young Seby was very pleased with his Batman Cake.
I also did some astrophotography. Here are some of my photos –
Next morning was cold and frosty, but some of us got up early to take photos.
I then headed part way up Thor Head for some more photos –
Near the turn-off to Thor Head are two piles of sandstone blocks – the remains of two old buildings.
After breakfast, we visited the nearby old coal mine and coke oven.
We then visited the nearby lookout on the side of Asgard Head.
Then it was back to the campsite to pack up and head home. More photos of the weekend are online here on my website.
