This was a very enjoyable day out with friends in the Mt Wilson area. We visited the lower section of the North Branch of Bowens Creek Canyon. The trip was organised by Wendy, and in the party were Enmoore, Keith and myself. Also Roscoe was visiting the canyon, but he arrived early at Mt Wilson and had set out by himself to visit the upper section of the canyon and meet us lower down.
We set off down the fire road. I was on the lookout for Flying Duck Orchids – but had not luck spotting any. I had seen them before in this area. Then we headed along the track that goes steeply down the gully to arrive at Boens Creek not far above the constricted section just before its junction with the South Branch.
We scrambled down the first waterfall – called Hanky Panky Falls by some. We then reached the first abseil.
Below, we could see Roscoe. He had made good time.
We then did the second abseil.
The canyon below was nice – but very difficult to photograph. The lighting was very harsh. Sunlight was ruining any photos taken looking upstream. The best I could do was get photos in some parts lit by reflected light.
We then had lunch at the junction – on a nice sunny rock. Then it was time to climb out. Above it was hot and sunny. We did spot a few Large Tongue Orchids at one spot near the track.
Thanks to Wendy for a great day out.
