Kiama Road Trip – 4 January 2019

Digi Dave invited me to join him on a trip to Kiama. He was heading down to pick up some gear at a friends place, but this would not take long and there could be some good photo spots to visit on the way down or back.

He picked me up near Heathcote Station as we continued onto the M1. However, the road was blocked near Figtree due to, what we found out later, a petrol tanker that had caught on fire. Google Maps came to our aid and guided us around the closed motorway. We then decided to head out to Hill 60 at Port Kembla – a nice lookout.

Here we could observe some birds flying past – mostly Ibis and Pelicans. However there was a Nankeen kestrel hunting nearby. It did not fly too close to us however.

Below, was a beautiful bay and the nearby Five Islands Nature Reserve.

We then continued south to Shellharbour and attempted to visit Bass Point. But a large marina – boat harbour is being excavated and this has cut off the road. We could not find a way around. Instead, we went and visited The Farm and Mystics – two nice beaches nearby.

We then headed to Minnamurra and set of for the Boneyard. But we were put off by a huge number of cars parked along the road above the track. So instead, we headed to Kiama and had fish and chips for lunch in a nice shady park.

From there, it was no far to where Digi Dave had to pick up the gear. His friends lived near The Little Blowhole – and this provided us with a nice short excursion. Even though there was low tide, the blowhole was working.

Next, we headed back north. We were surprised to find the motorway still closed – and again Google came to our aid.

The last spot we visited was Berambi Wetland at Corrimal. A nice place – but the birds were no that active in the heat.
