Northern Beaches – Walking, Swimming and Birding – 5 February 2019

A hot day was forecast. I was keen to get outdoors, but not looking for anything too strenuous. And some swimming would be nice. I ended up catching a B-Line bus to Mona Vale and then walking out to the beach.

I didn’t see any interesting birds there, so started waking south along the Coastal Path. I reached Turimetta Head and looked around, but again things were quiet. I continued past Turimetta Beach to Narrabeen Head. On the way I spotted a very distant raptor (a Sea Eagle I think?) –

I then had lunch at the lookout, and then descended to the rock pool for a swim. The water was very pleasant.

After the swim, I walked a short distance to a bus stop and caught a two buses – one to Pittwater Road and then another down Pittwater Road to Collaroy. I then walked out onto Long Reef.

The tide was still high, so I didn’t descend to the rock platform. Again, the birds were fairly quiet.

I continued to Dee Why Lagoon and walked around it to Dee Why Beach. Then to the rock pool for another swim. I continued along the Coastal Path to the sea cliffs looking for Peregrine Falcons. I soon spotted one of the juvenile Peregrine Falcons.

It was perched on the cliffs. I sat in a shady spot and waited to see if it would take off. It eventually did, but I messed up the series of take-off photos.

I followed it along the cliffs and spotted it again. But this time it flew off before I was ready and seemed to leave the area.

I walked past the headland and descended to the rock pool at Curl Curl. Another pleasant swim. And then I caught a bus to Manly and a ferry back to the city.
