Birds and Fungi at Sydney Olympic Park – 11 May 2019

The Sydney Fungal Studies Group were doing their second fungal survey at Sydney Olympic Park. The first one had been quite successful and was at the Newington Armory. This second one was at the Wentworth Common.

Brown Quail

At Wentworth Common, we were met by Tina, an ecologist working at the Park. The fungi turned out to be very poor, which was not surprising given that it haas been quite dry. Here are some of what we found (mainly old looking puffballs) –

I spent more time at the park photographing the birds. At Wentworth Common, I spotted a group of Brown Quails crossing one of the paths. I managed to get some photos of them before they vanished in the tall grass.

White we were having lunch, I looked up and spotted a Nankeen Kestrel hovering overhead.

I then slowly headed back through Bicentennial Park towards Concord West Station. Earlier, on the way to Wentworth Common, I had noticed a Sacred Kingfisher near the old wrecks. But it had flown off too fast to photograph. I was hoping to see it again.

I went out to the wrecks, and there were a few cormorants and a darter perched on the wooden wreck. I waited a while and was ready when the darter took off  –

I then moved  bit, and then I noticed the Kingfisher was sitting on a post near the wreck. It didn’t stay for long however.

At the main pond, near the inlet/outlet stream, the tide was on the way up and water was flowing in. Some grebes were around and did well catching small fish.

Later a pelican flew in, but it didn’t do as well. It looked like it caught a leaf.

And some of the other birds I saw –
