Tasmania – Fungi and Waterfalls at Castra Falls Scenic Preserve – 13 June 2019

This was perhaps the best day of fungi hunting that I went on in Tasmania. It was to a place – Castra Falls, near Preston, that I had not been to before. I was accompanied by my sister and brother in law. the weather on the day was poor – and sometimes we were walking and photographing under umbrellas.

Silver Falls

We started walking around the circuit in an anticlockwise direction – first visiting Step Falls.

Step Falls

After this we continued on the way to Castra Falls, but changed our minds due to the rain. The going was steep and slippery. So we headed back to the car, and then, with the rain lighter, we walked in the other direction – to Silver Falls.

This was perhaps the most impressive of the waterfalls – a two stage fall with side tracks to visit each part.

The whole area was covered in a wide range of fungi. Particularly the creek valley below Silver Falls.  First, some of the waxcaps –

And some of there wide range of Ascomycetes –

Some of the other fungi –

And, an interesting lichen –

We didn’t make it to Castra Falls, but it had been a very worthwhile day. More photos, together with identifications are online here on my website.
