Fungi at Mill Creek – 13 July 2019

I joined the filed activity at Mill Creek on the Hawkesbury River with the Sydney Fungal Studies Group Inc.  Conditions were not great – it had not been very wet in the lead up, but we did find some interesting fungi.

A few waxcaps were out. here are some –

And we did see some nice corals –

Some tiny fungi –

And some more photos –

And a number of Helmet Orchids were out –

More photos are online here on my website together with identifications.

Hi David, followed the link from the SFSG Newsletter, which shows the 3rd photo down (red one) as Hygrocybe astatogala. That species is distinguished by a dense cap covering of black fibrils. Your photo doesn’t seem to show any sign of these fibrils. A species which is similar, and without the fibrils, is Hygrocybe conica.

Thanks for your thoughtful comment Irene. I just had a look at my original photo, and magnified up the cap so it fills the computer monitor, and I have to admit that its hard to see the black fibrils. But I think there are on the very top and right side. I think they were easier to see on the day. I remember as soon as I saw it that I thought it was H astatogala. The single one we observed was quite fresh, and in my experience, the fibrils are either absent or very hard to see when the fruiting body first emerges from the ground and then develop as it ages.
