Red Rocks Weekend 24 – 25 August 2019

It was good to spend a weekend in the Northern Blue Mountains with a group of friends. John and Chuin Nee had organised the walk, and with them went their young sons Jasper and Sebastian, Eugene, Dave Os, Martin, Steffy, Rob, Rik, Colin, Sam and myself.

After driving to Newnes, we set off up the valley of Little Capertee Creek – following a rough and very faint track that follows the true left bank most of the way, and then up a side tributary to the Wolgan/Capertee divide.

It was pleasant walking all the way up, except that we had to carry all our water for the weekend, which made our packs a bit heavier than they might have been.

One on the divide – we followed under the base of some cliffs for short while and then climbed up onto a plateau that leads to Point Nicholson. There, we set up camp and sat down to admire the stunning views.

We had a pleasant late afternoon waiting for sunset, and enjoying some crackers, cheese and other nibbles. This was followed by a pleasant evening around a warm fire. It was a clear night and the stars were very bright when viewed from our high camp.

Next morning, I was awoken by young Sebastian (4 years old), who told me it was daylight and that I should get up. He was right. It was a pleasant dawn, and I quickly climbed to a higher vantage point for some photos.

Then back down to the fire for breakfast.

After that, we all climbed back up for the views on one of the nearby pagodas.

Then it was time to pack up and slowly head back. Some of the party went a slightly longer route, but we met up back in Little Capertee Creek for lunch. Then back down to the cars, and a stop at the Newnes Hotel for some ice creams. A very pleasant weekend.
