Karloo Pool – Uloola Falls – Kangaroo Ck Walk – Royal National Park – 12 July 2013

“Kanangra” had suggested this walk on the Bushwalking Forum. I met up with Digi Dave at Heathcote and we set off down the track to the Karloo Pool.

When we arrived, we found there was a huge party of children there, some of them swimming in the pool. The water sure looked cold. We took a few photos and then headed off towards Uloola Falls.

The last time I had been to Uloola Falls, I had missed the upper waterfall. This is reached via a track on the true right about 50 m upstream of the main waterfall. The upper falls are really only a small cascade, a few metres high, but they flow into a nice pool. In warmer weather, swimming would even be possible.

The upper falls are nice but were difficult to photograph in direct sunlight. So it was back down to the lower falls – the real Uloola Falls and then climb down to the bottom and look for photographic opportunities.

We spent a fair bit of time at the falls.

Our path next was the track to Audley. On the way, we visited an aboriginal art site. This was not far off the main track and featured some rock carvings and some sharpening grooves.

Not far before Audley, we turned off the track and followed another track that led back to Heathcote. This soon dropped down to Kangaroo Creek once again. We crossed it on a really attractive section of rocky slabs.

Then it was back up the hill on the other side, crossing a small creek and up to the Bottle Forest just outside of Heathcote. From there it was along a fire-road to Bottle Forrest Road and then a short walk along the streets back to Heathcote.

A very nice day out in the bush. More photos are on my website here.

Hi I was just wondering where abouts in Audley or along the track you found the rock carvings and sharpening grooves? Would be great to hear back to from you I am doing a report on Aboriginal culture in the Royal National Park.

    Kind regards,

    Jesse

These carvings are very close to Uloola Falls. Walk along the track to Audley for a few minutes and look for a faint turn-off leading to a rock outcrop.

Thanks so much for the tip. We found them towards Audley from the falls on the Uloola track, on the right near the top of the first hill as the main track turns to the left. Truly spectacular set of carvings and grooves. Please look after them and don’t be tempted to mark them in any way, just enjoy them for what they represent. David,
your photography is stunning, congratulations, please keep it up!

    Hello
I would like to know when you are at the top of Uloola falls next to the huge tree with lots of curves.. how to you get to the bottom of the falls?… i did not find any way down left or right…. or do you have to go from another direction?…. I was coming from Karloo and went back to Waterfall station? Thanks
    lovely photos

I think I have climbed down on both sides. Certainly the true left side goes – you can scramble down without too much trouble. The creek at the bottom is a bit tricky to cross with all the Water Gums. I think I traversed along the ledge well past the nice Angophora to find a break in there top cliffs – then just made my way down. I think its only worth going to the bottom when the falls have a good flow.
