Birds near Warriewood – 3 October 2019

Another full day of bird photography. Another very interesting and rewarding day. I caught a B-line bus to Warriewood and after a quick look along part of Mullt Creek, I headed to Warriewood Wetlands.

I first visited the Settling Ponds on the northern side. Here I encountered quite a few birds. Here are some –

Lewin’s Honeyeater

White-browed Scrubwren

Superb Fairywren

Grey Fantail

Eastern Yellow Robin

Royal Spoonbill

Great Egret

Whipbird

Swamp Harrier (with Magpie)

Black-faced Cuckooshrike

Olive-backed Oriole

Little Wattlebird

And one of the many Waterdragons

I met up with Jan at the Wetlands, and we then set off up to Irrawong Reserve. Some other bird photographers had told me the Barking Owl was around. Further along, I met local bird watcher, Kerry, and it was very kind of her to go to out of her way and show me where the owl was. It was worth seeing!

It was hard to photograph being perched high in the canopy, and also being asleep. But patience was rewarded as it did open its eyes for brief periods.

There were also a number of Eastern Yellow Robins around.

Back at the main boardwalk in Warriewood Wetlands I photographed a nice Variegated Fairywren –

And a Great Egret and Grey Butcherbird –

I then had lunch and farewelled Jan. I made my way along Mullet Creek again and didn’t see too much. Here is a Cormorant –

Around Narrabeen Lagoon, I didn’t see too many birds, so I made my way to the sporting field where the Ospreys are nesting.

The Ospreys were around. One stayed at or very close to the nest the whole time. Hopefully there are eggs of young chicks. But both the Ospreys had a hard time from their neighbours – Currawongs.

This Osprey then flew away – towards the beach.

The Currawongs then started on the Osprey remaining in the nest. It soon flew after them and a skirmish took place –

Then things quietened down somewhat. A little while later, the first Osprey returned with a nice fish.

There was also a Nankeen Kestrel hunting in the field for food.

It too was being harassed – but by Noisy Miners.
