Malabar Headland – 28 October 2019

The previous day had been most interesting. The next day I would be in Maroubra Junction during the middle of the day, so decided to make a return visit that afternoon. This time I started from the Malabar side and walked out to Boora Head.

Conditions were reasonable. As I walked in a I spotted a distant raptor. I think it may have been a Swamp Harrier –

It didn’t return. At the point, it was quiet, so I waited a while. A whale wet past.

Soon I spotted some Peregrine Falcons flying towards the area. An adult arrived first.

It was followed by a juvenile –

Then things remained very quiet. No more flying. Two of the juvenile Peregrine Falcons had settled on ledges near Boora Point.

I waited for a while, and then decided to walk slowly towards Maroubra Beach. The Slender Onion Orchids were still out in force –

Near Magic Point I spotted a Sea Eagle.

And a pod of whales went past.

The Sea Eagle was heading towards Boora Point, and then it suddenly turned and started to fly back. Two Peregrine Falcons were flying towards it at high speed – and adult and one of the juveniles.

The Sea Eagle flew past and went out of sight, and the Falcons returned the way they had come. I later saw the Sea Eagle flying back around Magic Point at low altitude. It seemed to be trying to sneak back.

It then started circling above Magic Point for a while.

It then flew out of sight, so I kept on my way towards the Beach. Near the park entrance gate, I stopped to photograph some of the Welcome Swallows flying over the pollution pool.
