Upper Blue Mountains Lookouts 26-28 September 2013

Digi Dave and myself were heading up the mountains for a party weekend at Deep Pass. We decided to head up a little early to give us time to visit some of the lookouts of the Upper Mountains to look for some good photo sites.

Our first post of call was just on dusk at the Sunset Rock Lookout at Wentworth Falls. This is a rock, or rather set of rocks, accessed from the road that goes down to Kedumba from the Kings Tableland Road. Juts before the road goes through a cutting, turn off on the right and the lookout can be found a short way along a track.

There are nice views from the lookout – particularly of the Jamison Valley, Mt Solitary and Narrow Neck. The sunset we experienced was not too special. The sun just set without a special lighting show. There is also a lot of graffiti – most of it chiselled into the rock! Some nearby rocks are graffiti free however.

We then headed to the camping area near Perrys Lookdown at Blackheath. It was a very windy night – and this campsite is relatively sheltered. I got up early for dawn – but again nothing too special. Similar views from Anvil Rock Lookout 15 minutes walk away.

After coffee in Blackheath, we next headed to lookouts near Katoomba.

Cahills Lookout was first and offered great views, particularly off Narrow Neck. But what really looks good is nearby Boar Head. So that was where we went next. This was reached by following an un-signposted track a short way. The actual Boar Head is a separated pinnacle and cannot be reached without an abseil and then a rock climb. But there were some interesting rock formations nearby and I though this would be a good place to return for dusk.

Then a short way along the road was the track to the Devils Hole. Digi Dave hadn’t seen this feature before – and it is not far down to this slot.

Next were some lookouts on Narrow Neck. Bottings Lookout, a short way off the Golden Stairs Track offers the first views of The Three Sisters available from Narrow Neck. It may be worth returning here for sunrise.

Then we went to another lookout, on the eastern side, a short way back. More fine view of the Jamison Valley, Mt Solitary and the Dogface (the Landslide area).

Sunset was approaching and the “golden hour”, so we headed back to the rocks above Boar Head. Nice conditions to photograph the many interesting features.

Our friends we were meeting in Katoomba that night were running a little late, so that gave us time to go to Echo Point Lookout and photograph the Three Sisters which were now floodlit. What was also good were the very clear skies. No moon meant excellent views of the Milky Way.

After meeting our friends and having dinner, we then all headed back to Perrys Lookdown to camp, and then the next morning a few more photos of the Grose Valley.
