I decided to have another look at Bola Creek to see how the fungi was going. Since my last visit, there had not been much rain, but the area had received a fair bit of rain in April (more than other parts of Sydney), and cooler weather should have kept the rainforest floor moist.
It turned out to be an excellent trip. I enjoyed the walk down from Waterfall Station to The Forest Path. And this time I could cross the Hacking River on stepping stones rather that taking off my shoes and socks and wading across. I then made my way to the rainforest section near Bola Creek as spent some time wandering around with my camera and tripod.
The cooler weather means its a good time to look for waxcaps – fungi in the family Hygrophoraceae. I was not disappointed. Here are some that I found –
Hygrocybe miniata
Porpolomopsis lewelliniae
In the photo above – you cans some springtails munching away in the split cap.
Hygrocybe sp.
Hygrocybe anomola var. anomola
These were all in the one area, but the ones below seem to have a slight purple tinge, so probably are Hygrocybe anomola var. ianthinmarginata –
Gliophorus graminicolor
Hygrocybe austropratensis
Hygrocybe lilaceolamellata
Hygrocybe sp.
This one was quite large – at least 5 cm across.
Hygrocybe cantherellus
Hygrocybe astatogala
Hygrocybe aurantipes
Hygrocybe erythrocrenata
Humidicutis helicoides
Hygophorus involutus
And often when you see waxcaps, you also see colourful coral fungi. That was correct this time.
And some of the other interesting fungi. I spotted this one – Cordyceps hawkesii –
I found this waxcap like fungi. Perhaps Camarophyllopsis sp.
And this one, which I think is Arrhenia sp.
One interesting one I found growing on the top of a log was fungus with spines. It seemed a very convoluted bracket fungus. The closest match I have for it so far is Climacodon septentrionalis.
Here are some Toothed Jellies – Pseudohydnum gelatinosum –
Another interesting fungus I found was this small white Ascomycete, Vibrissea dura –
And some of the other Ascomycetes –
And some of the other fungi –
And this one, which looks a bit like H austropratensis, but I think is Singerocybe clitocyboides –
I also saw some nice orchids. In the rainforest were plenty of these –
They are Corybas pruinosus. On the walk out I saw this one –
