Birds at the Central Coast Wetlands – 23 August 2020

I spent a nice day at the Central Coast Wetlands at Wyong. Like previous visits, I was on the lookout for Emu Wrens. But this time I failed to see any. There were plenty of other nice birds to see however.

Here are some of the birds –

Royal Spoonbill

White-faced Heron

White-necked Heron

Pied Butcherbird

Straw-necked Ibis

Cattle Egret

Australasian Darter

Long-beaked Corella

Red-rumped Parrots

White-breasted Woodswallow

Grey Fantail

Superb Fairy-wren

And there were some raptors. Here is one I saw early on –

It is a distant Whistling Kite.

The raptor I saw the most of was (or where, there may have been two) – a Nankeen Kestrel. The first one I saw had a Welcome Swallow –

I later saw the same bird, or a second Nankeen Kestrel in the same original place I had seen the first one. This one had a lizard.

And, later, I also saw a Raven harassing a Whistling Kite

After this visit, I went home via centennial Park – where I had a look at the Powerful Owls I had seen earlier.

    Hello David,
    Thank you for your blog.
It helped my ID a pair of Nankeen Kestrels, that were up in the tree canopy of my backyard here in Wahroonga.
Sorry I didn’t get any pictures.

    Hi David
I found your information of birds on the Central coast very interesting.
Would you have an book or like that I could purchase.
    Regards

Thanks for your comment. I have no books that would suit you. A general Birds of Australia book can be good, or an Australian bird app for your phone.
