On my way home from the Central Coast, I made a side trip to Centennial Park to see how the Powerful Owls were going. I was keen to see if the owlets had fledged, and if not, then it would be interesting to see the parents feeding them at dusk.
When I arrived, around 4:45 pm, both parents were asleep. I waited to see if they would stir – they did eventually.
I made a short side trip to see a tawny Frogmouth. Thanks to some birdwatchers from Germany that pointed it out to me.
Back to the Powerful Owls –
It was quite dark, when things started happening. This was at 5:50 pm. I could see the owlet (there may only be one?) looking out.
Soon after, at 5:52 pm, a parent flew over.
It was joined by the second parent.
These last set of photos were taken at 1/125 sec, f 6.3, 25,600 ISO, 600 mm, hand held.
By this time, the light had almost all gone and it was getting cold, so I headed home. A short visit – but a very worthwhile one.
Wow! A photo of an owlet!
The parents are active by 6pm.
I will go there to see them all in the evening!
I think the owlet may have now fledged.
My friends went to Centennial Park to see cygnets. As I told them where to find Poweful Owls, they also visited the spot. To their surprise, the white owlet was out of the nest and perched on a lower branch!
Sorry again and again.
Have you changed the setting of the reply function?
I can’t see any comments these days.
What a fabulous “side trip” .. wow!
Absolutely wonderful photos thank you David.
Do you know if the owlets have been born in the past week or two? I have seen the parents and dying to see the babies.
Thank you also for the tawny frogmouth. I ventured out to find one the other day in Centennial Park and was beyond delighted to see one.
Thanks for your kind comments. I have not heard how the Powerful Owls are going. I have not visited the park since the lockdown.
