Cooks River Birds – 27 November 2020

This was my next visit to check the status of some local birds. I cycled down to the Cooks River, and  went upstream to the Boat Harbour, then went downstream to Gough Whitlam Park, then back upstream again.

I first stopped off to check the status of a Willie Wagtail nest we had seen recently. There are now chicks, and the parents are busy supplying them with food.

And then I noticed some interesting behaviour. One of the chicks raised it lower parts, and then I saw the parent fly off with the chicks poo.

At the Boat Harbour, I first spotted a Grey Butcherbird getting some food.

The Tawny Frogmouth chicks and their parents had moved to a tree closer to the Boat Harbour. The tow chicks were quite high up and the parents lower down.

I then crossed the river and stopped off near Younger Avenue. There seems no change here, but the male on then nest does seem quite restless. I stayed for a while to see if I could spot any chicks – but had no luck.

The female was perched nearby.

Then I continued downstream to near Gough Whitlam Park. The male on the nest was not facing the path this time so chicks were hard to see.

Here you can just see a little bit of a chick on the right.

I am not sure how many chicks these birds have. I have only seen one, but there may be more. The female was perched a lot closer to the path –

On my way home, I stopped off near Younger Avenue for another look.

Again – he bird was quite restless, but I could not spot any chicks. The female was however awake and looking very cute –
