Lane Cove Bushland Park is a remnant of bushland along a tributary of Gore Creek. It is supposed to be a good place to see fungi, and being a wet day – I thought it would be a good place to visit.
It is easy to get to – being about a 15 minute walk from St Leonards Station. Not long after I arrived at the top end of the park, it started raining. I sheltered and waited for the rain to pass. I did after half and hour or so. While it was raining, I did wander around a bit – and did locate some interesting fungi nearby.
I then slowly walked down through the park – following a track on the east side of the creek, then slowly walked back up on the other side – again – mainly on good tracks. I did rain a few more times, and I had to suspend photography till it stopped.
The park is famous for fungi of the genus Hygrocybe. I don’t think I saw too many – perhaps it is too early in the year? There was a lot of other fungi out however, and I was in the small park for quite a few hours.
What was out was a lot of very tiny Mycena fungi – mainly white and red species. Some of these fungi were only about 2 mm across their caps.
In another place I observed two large rings of fungi.
Here is a selection of what I saw –
This park is easy to get to, and certainly a worthwhile place to visit, especially if you like looking out for fungi. More photos are on my website here.
I regularly played in this bushland area as a child and built cubby houses with my brother. Now I am an old lady living in a retirement village in northern New South Wales and I like to paint creeks. I thought of the creeks I used to play in and wondered what had become of them. I lived in Longueville Road not far from the Pacific Highway we would walk down Phoenix St until we came to the bush and cut across country towards River Road to find this spot.
