Wolli Creek is very easy for me to get to – so I thought another visit may be worthwhile to check out how the fungi was going. This time I walked down the valley from Bexley North Station to Turrella Station – a very convenient way to see the place.
Most, or all of the fungi from my last visit had gone – but a new lot was out. At the start I noticed a lot of puffballs, like the ones I had seen earlier in the week at Lane Cove. And plenty of the usual white mushrooms. There were a lot of very tiny red Mycena fungi out, and nearby were many patches of coral fungi – either white with sharp points or a larger brown-purple species.
Further down the valley I spotted a very unusual stinkhorn – one I had never seen before. It had white stalks with brown points. This was right on the track – hiding under fern.
I then crossed the road at Bardwell Park, and continued on through Girrahween Park. A short way on the track was a lovely set of three Starfish Fungus stinkhorns.
I followed the track past the climbing area, and then past an old swimming pool. Near here are a huge number of flying foxes – more photographic subjects. A lot of them seemed very playful, while nearby others were fast asleep.
At Turrella Reserve, I crossed Wolli Creek and from there it was a short walk to Turrella Station.
More photos, with my attempts to identify the fungi, can be viewed on my website starting on this page.
Update – I went back today (11 April 2014) and have added some new photos here.
The stinkhorn, I think your choice of Mutinus borneensis is correct, is a very good find.
Thanks Ken
