Cooks River Birds Update – 22 December 2020

Thanks to JG who left a comment on my blog about a Black Swan and its cygnet that had turned up at the Boat Harbour earlier that day. I have never seem one along the Cooks River before. So on my way home from Oatley Park, I detrained at Canterbury and walked down to the Boat Harbour.

I saw the Black Swans straight away. They were asleep near the Boat Harbour entrance.

Occasionally, one would awake. This was mostly the adult.

Then I turned my camera to the Tawny Frogmouth family. It took some time to locate them. I eventually spotted three of them in a tree closer to the footbridge.

A few of them seemed quite restless, which was better for photography.

This had been a nice interlude.

Hello David, Truely bizarre. WIRES Inner West left a message to Tempe Birdos on their facebook page that a cygnet escaped from Sydney Park when its sibling was injured. They asked if anyone saw it. Must be the one seen at Boat Harbour.
I messaged WIRES that it and an adult are at Cooks River.
Today, Wednesday, both are gone. Hopefully the adult guided the junior back home to Sydney Park.

That message about the Sydney Park Swan is a few days old – and they found it, and via WIRES it was returned. And I checked the Sydney Park facebook page yesterday – and there was nothing about it taking off again. Or a parent going with it or after it? But I thought it was likely that that is where they had come from. They seemed to be quite safe and content yesterday at the Boat Harbour – but the habitat is probably not ideal as they are not the usual residents. I don’t think it is a good idea for it to be returned to Sydney Park as the cygnet was being attacked by its father. There is good habitat not far away – eg Eastlakes, Centennial Park etc. Perhaps they have headed off there?
