Lawson South Waterfall Circuit – 28 December 2020

I had spent the night at Blackheath with the remnants of the canyoning party from the day before. We had thought about doing another canyon, but the weather was cooler and thunderstorms were predicted for later in the day. So after some discussion, we decide a walk would be nice and decided to do the Waterfall Walk on the south side of Lawson.

Adelina Falls

In the party were Martin, Steffy, Rick, Robin and myself. We were soon on our way. At the top track – we were surprised by all the cars parked there. It looks like these walks have become very popular. The path first took us to Adelina Falls.

We then continued to Junction Falls. As the name implies – there is a junction of two creeks, and each creek has its own waterfall just before they meet.

You first come to the waterfall on Ridge Creek. This is a beautiful fall with lots of small ledges for the water to cascade down.

The waterfall on Lawson Creek is not as pretty and harder to photograph. An untidy fallen tree mars the scene.

The next waterfall is Federal Falls. This is perhaps the most impressive of the series.

Back on the main track, further along is a small cascade – sometimes called Rosemarys Falls.

Here we spotted a nice Yellow-throated Scrubwren

And we could hear the calls of a Whipbird. We waited to see if it would appear out of the foliage. It eventually did –

And I think this is a Long-billed Scrubwren

There was a little bir of fungi out, including these ChaneterellesCantherellus concinnus

And some orchids – Bonnet OrchidCryptostylis erecta –

And Yellow Leek OrchidPrasophyllum flavum

I didn’t photograph the last waterfall – Cataract Falls.

Here is one of many Mountain Dragons

It was lunchtime when we finished the walk, and we stopped of for a Thai meal at Hazelbrook. It had been a pleasant day out. What about that forecast storm? It did come – but later in the afternoon.
