Lane Cove Valley Walk – 4 January 2021

I was keen to get outside and look for fungi after some good recent rain falls. I did want to head up to Sassafras Gully at Springwood, but the weather forecast was not the best, so I decided to do a shorter trip to the Lane Cove Valley. I caught train to Thornleigh and walked down the river to Browns Waterhole, then up Terrys Creek to Eastwood.

All along the way, I found nice orchids, fungi and birds.

Here are some of the orchids I found –

Bonnet OrchidCryptostylis erecta

Large Tongue OrchidCryptostylis subulata

Hyacinth OrchidDipodium variegatum

And fungi –

Phlebopus marginatus

Russula rosea

Xylaria sp.

Perhaps Trogia sp.

?

Jelly FungusTremella sp.

Entoloma sp.

Delicatula integrella

Russula lenkunya

Cruentomycena viscidocruenta

Austroboletus lacunosus

And a few slime moulds –

Ceratiomyxa fruticulosa

And some of the birds –

Golden Whistler (female)

White-browed Scrubwren

Brown Cuckoo-dove

Brown Gerygone

Eastern Yellow Robin

Silvereye

White-browed Scrubwren

Powerful Owl with prey

And a Water Skink and Dragonfly –

I don’t usually post comments, but feel compelled to thank you for your excellent posts and awesome photos. This particular track is in my neck of the woods, and I know it well – and obviously need to slow down and observe more! And learn the names of some birds. Great blogs and you provide both a great source of information and inspiration. Thank you and don’t stop.
