Morels are an unusual type of fungi. I had never seen them before and was quite intrigued when Brian Everingham of the National Parks Association posted some shots on Facebook of some he had recently spotted near where he lives at Engadine. I got in touch with Brian, and he went out of his way to tell me where they were and to also take me to the location. Many thanks Brian.
The morels were growing very close to the Woronora Dam Pipeline – and very easy to walk to.
They would have look a bit better a few days earlier, when Brian had spotted them, but they were still not bad. On a bank right next to the pipeline access road were at least twenty morels. Some of them appeared to be growing in rings.
Most morels found in Australia are dark in colour. These were a light yellow. They were probably Morchella esculenta.
Near one of the morels, some white coral fungi had grown and there were a few there nice fungi around as well.
Nearby, is Engadine Lagoon, a large pool on the Woronora River just above the tidal section of the river.
