Birds and Reptiles at Nurragingy Reserve – 14 February 2021

I spent another  nice day out at Nurragingy Reserve at Doonside. Like previous visits, I was hoping to see more of the Kingfishers – the Azure and Sacred, but as it turned out, I didn’t see any of the Azure Kingfishers. I only saw a single Sacred Kingfisher just before I left the Reserve in the early afternoon. But there were a lot of other nice birds to see – as well as some reptiles (some in the beaks of birds).

Here are some of the birds I saw –

White-winged Choughs

These birds look like Ravens unless you look at them carefully. The white is under their wings and hard to see unless they are flying. Their eyes however are red.

On my past visits I had seen this nest with a parent sitting on it. It is good to see there is now one chick hatched. The parent then sat back on the nest – so perhaps more eggs to hatch? I first spotted the nest on my visit on 7 January.

Australian Raven and Noisy Miner

Notice the eye colour.

Yellow-faced Honeyeaters

Scarlet Honeyeaters

The last one is a female or juvenile.

Mistletoebird

Thanks to bird expert Jenny Styles for pointing out to me what this was. I am familiar with the males. These are females or juveniles.

Red-browed Finch

Brown Thornbills

Again, thanks to Jenny for pointing out that they were Brown Thonbills (rather than Striated Thornbills)

Laughing Kookaburra

This one has caught a nice lizard.

Grey Butcherbird

This juvenile also has a lizard, but does not seem to know what to do with it.

Sacred Kingfisher

I only spotted one Kingfisher during my visit. And it only appeared just before I was leaving.

Sulphur-crested Cockatoos

White-faced Heron

Little Pied Cormorant

And for some more reptiles. First an Eastern Water Dragon

And on the perimeter fire road, near the creek, I saw this nice Red-bellied Black Snake
