I had visited Philosophers Falls twice before, in April 2018 and June 2019, and it had been an outstanding place to find colourful fungi. So I was pleased that my sister proposed it as a trip for this day. The previous day had been an inside day – wet, cold and windy, so it was great to wake up to improved weather and then head out to Waratah and a short way beyond to Philosophers Falls.
It was a good omen at the carpark, to be welcomed by a beautiful Pink Robin.
And then we started hunting for fungi to photograph. Here is some of what we found.
First, a huge abundance of Jelly Babies (Leotica lubrica).
and some more Ascomycetes –
Xylaria castorea
Geoglossum cookeanum
Trichoglossum hirsutum
Ascocoryne sarcoides
Bisporella citrina
And some habitat –
Now for some of the Waxcaps –
Hygrocybe firma
Gliophorus graminicolor
Gliophorus chromolimoneus
Hygrocybe astatogala
Hygrocybe apricosa
Hygrocybe lilaceolamellata
Porpolomopsis lewelliniae
Hygrocybe sp.
I have seen this species before, but don’t know what it is. Perhaps not described.
Hygrocybe sp.
This is another species that I don’t know. It is very distinctive with its comical red cap and yellow-orange stipe. I saw some more examples –
Perhaps they are very fresh Hygrocybe astatogala. The colour and shape matches, but they do not have the distinctive black fibrils.
Hygrocybe aurantiopallens
And there was a large cluster of this Hygrocybe sp, near the carpark –
I wonder is this species could be Hygrocybe saltorivula.
Some of the Coral Fungi next.
Clavulinopsis sulcata
Clavaria zollingeri
Clavulina subrugosa
Clavulina cristata
and some of the other fungi –
Pholiota malicola
Hypholoma sp.
Russula sp.
Russula persanguinea
Hypholoma brunneum
Entoloma sp.
Calostoma fuscum
Dacrymyces sp.
Mycena interrupta
I am not sure what this one is, perhaps a developing Pluteus?
And this visit we did make it to the spectacular Philosophers Falls.
The track near the falls follows an old mining sluice.
And a few more of the habitat on the walk out.
